PHILLIP THRILL

Phil Thrill swallowed pills,
The family was waiting
When he came back to Tennessee
His years away
Had made his hair gray,
And made it hard for his eyes to see
But pills were plentiful,
And alcohol was in the skull,
Made him feel okay to be himself,
With his tattooed arms and his empty shelf

It's a pity how the bombs took his legs away,
God did not mean for him to dance and swing and sway
He was a star in Little League,
Great teams fade, you can't sustain the dynasty
Oohhhh....

Phil Thrill's bunker hill
Was just a memory
His family tried to build him up but he fell
Phil had a hard time dealing
So he numbed that empty feeling
Now he was stuck in pawn shops for show and tell
They say blood is thicker than water
But he could not talk to his daughter
So he wandered aimlessly through his days
And found it hard to find a job that pays

It's a pity how the bombs took his legs away,
God did not mean for him to dance and swing and sway
He was a star in Little League,
Great teams fade, you can't sustain the dynasty
Oohhhh....

Phil Thrill was sitting still
Under a lone light bulb
He felt anxious as the dreams declined
All his friends had built mountains
And their wealth sprang up like fountains
While he got better acquainted with his mind
He had so many illusions
In that room he had to lose them
His legs had gone, now the rest of him followed
And he was taken to a hill where a hole was hollowed

It's a pity how the bombs took his legs away,
God did not mean for him to dance and swing and sway
He was a star in Little League,
Great teams fade, you can't sustain the dynasty
Oohhhh....

INSISTENT DRUMMER

Someone
Built the buildings
Someone
Made the shoes
They are far away from here

Someone
Built the company
Someone
Built the state
They are far away from here

Does it make you blue?
Look all around you?
Who made who, who made you?

Someone
Has an idea of control
Someone
Made the mold
I feel alive in this hold

We are marching in step
We are growing our dreams
We will not let them die…

Someone
Paved the street
Someone
Is on the beat
March on to that insistent drummer

Does it make you blue?
Look all around you?
Who made who, who made you?

Someone
Built the ship I'm sailing on
Someone
Built the sea I'm sailing on
They are far away from here

We are marching in step
We are growing our dreams
We will not let them die…

Someone
Paved the street
Someone
Is on the beat
March on to that insistent drummer

We are marching in step
We are growing our dreams
We will not let them die…

CENTER OF THE STORM

Billy changes hair pins
He ably averts the sink swim
Drama queens, big dreams
Lincoln was a Byzantine
He had time to spend a dime
Whisked off to better climes
Who's got the whiskers?
Who suns the blisters?
Look over your shoulder
People are getting' older
Jesus died for something
That's why you still sing
To avoid all the celluloid
The drama and the androids
Who is that barker?
Swingin' the black cane
White gloves but darker
Secrets swirl down the drain

Arnie was a big boy
Joking about the shiny toys
Wrestling with the age
Drama patterned on the page
The FBI is on the line
Hoover had a bunch of twine
Someone did a Watergate
Now the MIB's are all irate
Look over your shoulder
People are getting' older
Stay away from charlatans
Son of Sam and Sam I Am
I don't care for harlequins
In the dance in Paris, France
We danced in our chambers
We stole away from danger
We did not describe the mess
We played it close to the vest

Hospital, non-committal
Playing on a large fiddle
We do the Lord's work
We pump it like a soda jerk
Scar tissue on old phones
Walk among the pheromones
We don't know we don't care
The scar tissue's gonna tear
Look over your shoulder
People are getting' older
Docile Dave, with a slave
Grindin' out the water wave
Down with production
Curtail consumption
All the ink on the page
All the words of the sage
Are makin' me a pleader
All the hearts are full of bleeders

Wear a white shirt, it hurts
Spill the coffee, eat the toffee
Dance long, sing songs
Eat meat, beat feet
Shovel snow, watch it blow
Drop loads, trot globes
Snow globes and electrodes
We know we got the carpet holds
Look over your shoulder
People are getting' older
If you want to escape
You buy yourself a cape
Make a waffle from a mold
Tell them it's been sold
Turn your work in on time
Save yourself a dime
If you're feelin' funny
Spend some monopoly money

BENEATH THE HEMLOCK

Don't want to write
Another song about worries
Don't want to write
Another song about pain
Don't want to breathe
Life into the bad
When the good is all around
Take stock in that

People come together
Then they pull apart
People get lonely
And then they get blue
They get hungry
They get fed
They just need to fix their head
What is a person to do?

We all want to have
A place to hang our hat
We all want to have a home
That we can count on

Punch at the darkness
Look for a partner
Look for a shadow
Look for a sign
We have reason to feel
That we have nobody
But all we can know
Is what's in our minds

We all want to have
A place to hang our hat
We all want to have a home
That we can count on

We all want to have a home
That we can count on

Beneath the hemlock
Is where I set my camp
Beneath the hemlock
It got cold and damp
Beneath the hemlock
Is where I hung my hat
Beneath the hemlock
Is the ground where I could stand

SO LONG SINCE i WAS LOST

He draws a picture of the perfect competition
He makes sure it's always the best rendition
He draws a picture of a dream girl by a river
He writes a poem about all the things he'll give her

And it's so long since I was lost
So long since I was lost
So long since I was lost

Betsy Baby had a dream of being big
She got an answer, she got a solution in the gig
All the status of the shiny apparition
Do not believe what you see in superstition

And it's so long since I was lost
So long since I was lost
So long since I was lost

Hey, hey he got an emblem on his chest
Sometimes, sometimes he gets depressed
All the times he second guessed what he did
Now you know he has everything for a swig

And it's so long since I was lost
So long since I was lost
So long since I was lost

WOW! WHAT WAS THAT?

Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow
Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow

I guess this was a mistake, I took more
Than I was supposed to take
Wow, wow,
I know it was just a ruse, but I overstepped
And you had to lose
But it's just a simple
Stumble I could correct

Wow!
Why did I do that?
I pushed all your buttons
I made you fall flat
Wow, wow
Wow!
What was all that?
I didn't know
Or maybe I knew all along

It's just that I cannot learn,
I believe that it
Cannot be earned
If you want to make an impact,
It cannot be sloppy
It must be exact
And you had to lose
But it's just a simple
Stumble I could correct

Wow!
Why did I do that?
I pushed all your buttons
I made you fall flat
Wow, wow
Wow!
What was all that?
I didn't know
Or maybe I knew all along

Wow!
Why did I do that?
I pushed all your buttons
I made you fall flat
Wow, wow
Wow!
What was all that?
I didn't know

MONDAY WONDER

Monday wonder that I share with you
Big plunder in the things you do
Bat a lash and make a cute face
You and me by the sea
You and me by the sea
What a wonderful scene
You and me by the sea
What a wonderful scene

Monday wonder that I share with you
You pushed me to do the thing for two
Not one but a tandem pair
You and me by the sea
You and me by the sea
What a wonderful scene
You and me by the sea
What a wonderful scene

Monday wonder, the sound of alarms
Hit the brakes on all of the charms
Had the shakes in back of the car
You and me by the sea
You and me by the sea
What a wonderful scene
You and me by the sea
What a wonderful scene

Not Sunday, not Saturday night
You have not found yourself in the fight
We sit back and relax on this skiff
You and me by the sea
You and me by the sea
What a wonderful scene
You and me by the sea
What a wonderful scene

Monday wonder that I share with you
Big plunder in the things you do
Bat a lash and make a cute face
You and me by the sea
You and me by the sea
What a wonderful scene
You and me by the sea
What a wonderful scene

I AM FINALLY ALIVE

I am finally alive
I woke up and took my first breath
I skipped down the street
On a pair of new feet
I have not felt this before

I saw you among the grass
You had blossomed like a flower
We had cut all the buds before
Now you grew just like they grew
And now you're beautiful

So I had to write it down
And let the water lights surround
It is hard to say it perfectly
So I will make mistakes
But there is no place quite like this

I thought you'd died that one night
When you spun out and nearly crashed
We are bad drivers,
Sometimes we lose
All control and it allows us to say

I am finally alive
I didn't used to know what that meant
I had a fall
And now I'm changed by it all
Now there's so much for us to do

The world is full of possibility
I am walking down the alley
And I'm thinking of you and me
Of all the things we have
And all we can discover
So let's not look to the clouds
Let's stare straight at one another

LET'S MAKE IT WORK

Yes, it's been a while, yes, I see your smile
Yes, I can see that you still want me
It's been years, and we fight the gravity
We want a hand that we can hold
So put yours in mind, it's all right
We fell out of love, and now we fell hard
We need someone, we ended up here
This is it, this is right now
This is the real thing
Let's make it work

At the bottom of it all, I need somebody
Put it all out there, get something back
What were those words, those long conversations
I think we'll make up, for all that we lack
It's just a simple thing
It's not complicated
It's just a feeling
We don't need to explain
This is it, we're here right now
This is the real thing
Let's make it work

I know it's hard to explain it
I know it's hard to contain it
But we've had our share of hard times
We've had our share of heartache
Alone we come together

This is it, this is right now
This is the real thing
Let's make it work

This is it, this is right now
This is the real thing
Let's make it work

This is it, this is right now
This is the real thing
Let's make it work

YOU WISH HE'D RETURN

Simple Simon knew you'd find
A place to hide away
You said you'd love the man again
On some other day
Now you feel the fall a bit
And you want his touch
But he's moved on to someone new
He don't think 'bout you much

Oh, Mary why'd you walk away?
You had him but you let him go
Oh, Mary you did not let him stay
You see him with someone else
And you wish he'd return
You wish he'd return
You wish he'd return
You wish he'd return

You were busy chasin' boys
While he was chasin' you
Since he was always in the way
He fell completely out of view
It's not the things out of your reach
That cause you to work so hard
All the things you need, my dear
Are right in your back yard

Oh, Mary why'd you walk away?
You had him but you let him go
Oh, Mary you did not let him stay
You see him with someone else
And you wish he'd return
You wish he'd return
You wish he'd return
You wish he'd return

YOU AIN'T THE GUY

You can keep tryin', Ryan, but she ain't buyin'
Took too long, John, now it's time to be gone
Walk away, Jay, she don't want you to stay
Say goodybe, Ty, you ain't the guy

Mindy why you'd leave, you're makin' me grieve,
Oh, I got some tricks still up my sleeve
I think if you give me a chance,
I'll take you back to the dance

You can keep tryin', Ryan, but she ain't buyin'
Took too long, John, now it's time to be gone
Walk away, Jay, she don't want you to stay
Say goodybe, Ty, you ain't the guy

Mindy, I know, you're gone to Buffalo
But I think they you and me can make a go
If you give me one more shot
I give you what you ain't got

You can keep tryin', Ryan, but she ain't buyin'
Took too long, John, now it's time to be gone
Walk away, Jay, she don't want you to stay
Say goodybe, Ty, you ain't the guy
You ain't the guy
You ain't the guy
You ain't the guy
