THE FIRST LIGHTS OF DAY

So, as the nighttime slips away
Don't you know I'll see you comin'
In the first lights of day

Time passes quickly, passes me by
I can only sit and wonder why

Memories, memories
They taste sweet on a morning breeze
Tell me about all those youthful dreameries
You did decree

So, as the nighttime slips away
Don't you know I'll see you comin'
In the first lights of day

Won't you come on, won't you come on
Whoa! Yeah! Come on one more time

So, sing it sing it
Sing what it is you want to say
Don't you know I'll see you comin'
In the first lights of day

AS I WANTED TO BE SEEN

I've had a few drinks from the cocktail tray
And I've warmed up to the scene quite a bit
What was stale and superficial a little while ago
Now flickers like the cigarette I just lit

"Don't love me for my eyes," she says quickly
After skating across the room to indulge me
She could sense the compliment I was about to give
She said, "Everyone loves my eyes so much that I can hardly see"

I said, "I can't deny your pretty eyes my dear
And I love your golden skin and your honest voice
But you'll get nothin' from a shifty, young drunk like me
Except good company, hopefully company of your choice"

She giggled and she puckered up her lips
And she offered a precocious little smile
She said, "I've got my white car parked out front by all the rest
Why don't we take it for a ride in a while?"
I said, "Baby you've got beautiful style"

So many can be so disappointing in these parts
Not this girl with the golden skin
And the lips and the eyes and the soul

I follow that radiant, yellow dress
Hand in hand out to the balcony
Where we look down at the jazz band playin'
And the party dancin' in all its glory

OH, MUSIC

Oh, music lets me know I'm not alone
Casting great diversions
Oh, music makes it clear for a moment

It's gonna be clear
Making sense of tinted distances
Explaining all coincidences
Casting light upon a lovely scene

Country noise
Liftin' up the spirits of music from below
Country noise
Harkens back to Jericho

Drawing great music as they go
A monument in a grain of sand
Praying for a spark
Slipping through the bottom of my hand

Growing old
Parcel out age as we go
Tripping after everything we know
Like monuments in sand

It's amazing
Disappearing like a daydream
Falling off into some sunset
It's gonna bathe me
A moonlight glow
Gonna save me
It's disappearing
Out on the coast

Oh, music lets me know I'm not alone
Casting great diversions
Oh, music makes it clear for a moment

THREE OLD FISHERMEN

The three old fishermen sit at the table
They don't like lumbering over barstools
They're regulars around here and they don't stray or veer
They keep indoors, away from the wretched weather and act cool

Old Jim, he tugs on his dirty beard
And rambles 'bout the times of old
And Teddy he slaps Jim over n' over on the back
And spits more and more as each tale is told

And with each beer that crosses their lips
Their volume gets louder and louder
And the heater in the corner grumbles out some steam
And the waitress serves the three fishermen their chowder

They say,
"We're three old fishermen
Three old fishermen
Three old fishermen for the rest of our lives
We're three old fishermen
Three old fishermen
Fishin' for a little juice from this life
Fishin' till the day that we die"

FOGGY NIGHTS & GLASSY LIGHTS

Baby, every day things are changin'
Your best friend married on Sunday
Made you start feelin' strange and
You've got a suitcase
Full of clothes
And where you're headed, God knows

Foggy nights
Glassy lights
Tender is the outcome we fight

The elegant restaurants
On 5th avenue
Light a path that makes you
Realize what you've got to do

Baby, every day both of us get older
You're determined not to go and fit the mold
Like your sister, but you told her
You do not fear
The foggy nights
The truth will shatter the cold façade of the glassy lights

Foggy nights
Glassy lights
Tender is the outcome we fight

SWEET GEORGIA WOMAN

Georgia woman pulls the bottle from my hand
I'm singin' so merrily and I'm sick of tryin' to measure out the sea
Stuck between the ocean and a riverboat glow
Stuck between the coasts with no friends to show

Sweet Georgia woman shine a light on me
When the light hits me my soul is plain to see
Sweet Georgia woman have some faith in me

I'm sinkin' by the firelight
Seems I got no place to go
Stuck between an ocean and a riverboat show
Stuck between the coasts with no friends to show

I'm gone

Sweet Georgia woman light the way for me
Yes, I'm gone, I know I ain't no beauty
But Sweet Georgia woman have some faith in me

I'm gone

Sweet Georgia Woman you can guide me
Yes, I'm gone, I care not about glory
But Sweet Georgia woman have some faith in me

LOVE IS AN IDEA THAT LOVING TAKES AWAY

Oh, romance
Painful romance

She says, "Why must you make a poem out of me?
Why can't you love me for who I am, when I am simply being me?"
I say, "I love all the things that you are, as well as all the things that you could be
- the possibility"

So, you are my first thought at the start of the day
But love is an idea that loving takes away

Oh, romance again
Painful romance again
Romance, romance
Romance, romance
Takin' a chance on romance
Takin' a chance on romance

All the things we've said in love or out of hate
Tryin' to carry all of that weight

So, you are my first thought at the start of the day
But love is an idea that loving takes away

Oh, here we are again
Oh, so needy again
Oh, so tangled up again
We've created this mess that we're livin' in
There's only two and only one
We've got to lean on each other

Sweet chariot
Come down easy
Sweep down slow
When the dust settles
Show us the way to go
Send me, send me chariot
Chariot, white as snow
The easy part is leaving
The hardest part is learning to let go

LOVE IS ALL YOU'VE GOT IN LIFE

When the sun slips behind the trees
Like the very first evening, it fades
The end of a day, the end of a way
The end of a promenade

This is not for you, this is for me
I can't give but I can take

Sittin' in the front seat of your car
You ask, "What is it that you want?
What do you want from me?
What do I seem to offer aside from a quick jaunt?"

Well, I guess love
Is a give and a take
But you can't take more than you give
But I know you got your plans
You've got your own life to live

I'm falling away
It will all just fall away, everything in this world
The college counselor doesn't tell you that

It's been about a week since we smiled the way
Two bright-eyed lovers do
Been way too long since we thought about ourselves
The way we used to
I'm getting old and it seems so cold
The way you don't want me
The way I think one obviously should
Baby, tell me the truth: am I no good?

There can only be love when
There is mutual admiration
In awe of all that the other person becomes

But love is a give and take
And you want to take too much from me
I got my needs, I'm too needy
Too in love
To be all the things you want me to be

I'm not good at small talk
I'm not good at a lot of things
You've got nothing for me
I told you
My heart is on my sleeve
Please, please
Give something to me
Give something to me

I'm floored and just hear these words I say:
Love is all you've got in this life
And death won't take it away

GRAB IT BEFORE IT'S GONE

Tired, so tired of seeing everything approximately
Tired of all the mysteries and all of the uncertainties
I'm tired of you, I'm tired of me
I'm tired of tryin' to gauge the wind and measure out the sea

She pulls me close and reads me the most lovely poetry
And she says, "You're not going to reduce me to a written word on a sleeve"
But I want to hold you till the sunset of life falls upon me
Let me in, let me in, not to end but to begin to make you free

Don't things look swell? Don't things look great?
I think I'll get drunk for a week straight
I don't want no time to contemplate
All the things we owe to a twist of fate

She pulls me over and she reads me the most amazing poetry
She says, "This is the way things should look, this is the way our worlds should be"
I say, "Baby those are words, just beautiful words to me
We got to make things new, like morning dew, in order to finally be fresh and free"

So touch me one more time
Before you start to play
Just one more time
Before it slips away I want to grab it before it's gone
