PART
I BACK STORY Melinda is the neighborhood girl, She's
the talk of the town With violence at recent kegs, The police have been
coming around The parents say, "Now, what do you boys think Of the prettiest
girl?" They say, "We'd fight For the prettiest girl in our world"
MELINDA Melinda keeps her goals in her locket She keeps Jack's
picture in her locker She huffs and she puffs when they pass in the hall
She heads from the school to watch the boys play ball She knows what they
keep in their pockets LETTERMAN JACK Jack says, "Our white-hatted
ways are top-notch We are the crème of the crop We drive in Blazers to
the parking lot The keg is in the back of the car, Pop the hood, clean
the screen We got the braided belts And we all wear green jeans"
Jack practices football He passed Melinda in the hall He tells the boys
in the locker room, "I'm going to take her pearl" He just met her
He gets another of her love letters He still has dirt on his football pants
He needs to get clean SWITCHBLADE SAM Black-hatted Sam is so young
Black sweatpants with stuffed pockets His parka is warm for the summer night
People say he carries a gun In reality, he's only got a switchblade
He keeps Melinda's picture in his dresser drawer Sometimes he takes it out
and brings it to school He gets all his kicks in the lone bathroom stall
We don't want to talk about what he keeps in his pocket He says, "Melinda,
you've fallen To the white-hatted man You soon will be losing your pearl
On the football field Friday, Midnight, 'neath the stars You're joining
the lost and sad girls" "You'll run for me, When he's lost his lust for
you - The innocent girl You'll say 'Don't you know what I've been
through tonight?'" When that happens Sam thinks to himself I'm gonna
get my switchblade THINKING ABOUT THE UPCOMING ENCOUNTER Jack thought
little but of his own desires He didn't know where they came from He
thought, "Don't you know there's no time like tonight? I see paradise in
the back seat of the Blazer" FOOTBALL GAME Melinda came from Woodcrest
She traveled to the football game She came with her rich, snobby friends
She saw Sam on her way in Sam was leaving She broke away for a second
She wanted to pass him her number Sam said, "Are you ready for the Friday
night lights?" Her picture was cropped for his locket They sat on the
bleachers, The blue played football She smiled and stuck her number
in his pocket He smiled and walked away He was headed to the keg He
took a flask from his pocket They were to meet later at the park Sam wished
he could save her SAM HITS THE KEG PARTY Sam went to the park
He looked for the keg They charged him Three bucks for a cup He tossed
the keg cup And said, "I'm out of here I'm going to hang by The
fountain with my friends" KEGGER There it was Near Pine and
Frostbite So many secrets in the dark There's a kegger at Roberts Park
Far away, through the trees You can see the cops Busting up a different
house party It's Friday night The kids will get older The damage
will surface It will take a lifetime to repair Melinda she was kidnapped
By the Letterman Jack They sped to the keg in his Blazer She sipped
her three dollar cup in the dark, She spilled her beer on the bark She
waited for Sam to come save her SAM HANGS WITH THE HOODS Sam he
fell to Bacchus and his pards He sipped a Schmidt While the QA posse
sped for the park, In search of pearls Then he sipped Rainier Beer
While he and his boys Cruised for the midnight world He said, "Our fathers
are old But you know they still see the stars They haven't lost the lust
for young girls" THE BACK OF THE BLAZER Melinda was stopped
By Letterman Jack He grabbed her arm To take her from the keg Back
to his brand new Blazer Melinda is stuck With the white-hatted man
Jack soon will be taking her pearl He drove back to the stadium On the
football field Friday, midnight, 'neath the stars She's just on the edge
of her innocent world She said, "Don't you know It feels like a cold,
Innocent autumn night? I'm too young to be old, Can't you tell
by the way I stand?" She said, "Don't you know It will all change after
tonight?" She didn't want it and she said so But Jack simply wouldn't
let go It was hot in the back of the Blazer She says, "Why, oh, why Jack,
Did you forsake me? You know that I didn't deserve this" He said,
"We boys have our lust For the parking lot girls But the blood in the
car Makes me nervous" She says, "Don't you know That the night suits
you just right?" PART II MELINDA PONDERS Don't
you know I lost my innocence tonight? I never thought it would happen like
that In the back of a Blazer with a cold-hearted man Don't you know the
soul is too young? Don't you know my soul still burns bright? MELINDA
FINDS SAM Sam sipped a beer by the fountain with his friends They
smoked cigarettes while he talked of rock n' roll They smoked pot in jean
jackets while he waited for her to show Melinda ran to him, She said,
"This is the end Jack took my pearl His lust for girls took my soul
In the back of the Blazer There were bloodstained hands I'm too young
to be old, Can't you tell by the way I stand?" She said, "Hold me, Sam,
In the soft summer moonlight Don't you know my soul is too weak?
All of this is just not right" SAM & MELINDA SPEAK She said, "Let's
go to the lookout" She said, "This will take a lifetime to repair" When
they reached the lookout up at Bi Crake, She said, "Can't you see it will
never work for you and me I'm always something different than you And
you will never be what I need But we have tonight I need someone to be
there for me From the lookout we can still see the same city" "So hold
my hand They will cause trouble again The lights are going down in downtown
Hold me now because I might not ever see you again I've got to get away from
all of this" Melinda fell to Bacchus and his pards She exclaimed in a
beautiful slur, "Our friends will continue to drive Blazers To kegs
in dark parks But there is a fate I prefer" Sam said, "I must do something
I feel powerless Kids can't keep our innocent world Our fathers are
old, But they still see the stars. They haven't lost their lust for
the girls" They held each other close They knew they were the kind
Who can live together in harmony They looked out at the city from Bi Crake
She said, "It seems I can't be what I need to be for you But you need
something different, too Those brawls at kegs are not what I need No,
they aren't what I need But I don't know where I can get free" Sam
said, "You're joining the lost and sad girls You'll run for me,
When a guy like Jack Loses his desire For the innocent girl I'm the
kind of guy Who will complete your world" He put the music on his walkman
He put the headphones on Melinda He says, "You need to find a song That
can be uplifting In the end, for me It always comes back To a love
song for a girl" SAM RETURNS TO THE KEG PARTY FOR A FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHT
Sam said, "I'll bust the keg up, Gonna get that man Don't you
know that I'll bust him up tonight? I can see it's a Friday night fight
Gonna get my switchblade We will wash our bloodstained hands" He ran
for the park and he looked for the keg They tried to charge him three bucks
for a cup He found out the boy who had hurt Melinda He found him surrounded
by his clan He threw a keg cup in his face He broke a bottle on the ledge
He fell down then he busted Jack up THE MEANING OF THE FIGHT The
music blared from the parked Blazers Don't you know the song was just right?
Blood mixed with the dirt It mixed with the tiniest grains Tomorrow
there will be rain Sam hoped it would wash away all the mess He thought,
Don't you know I'm a Friday night casualty? Don't you know it's a Friday
night fight? It's Friday night The kids will get older It will take
a lifetime to repair Don't you know that I busted him up tonight? Can't
you tell, baby, by my bloodstained hands? Don't you know what I've been through
tonight? The cars speed away and I might not see her again I couldn't
have imagined it would be this way My brother didn't prepare me with what
he told me About these Friday night stands These grand stands These
brawls It's so new and exciting and all It's a rumble, caused by women
again MELINDA DISCUSSES IT WITH HER FOLKS (A DAUGHTER'S LAMENT)
I was with my friends at the football game We were just being daughters in
an innocent world I met a cute guy I've had a crush on him He robbed
me of my simple purpose Don't you know my soul is not right? It can never,
ever be repaired Oh, I don't know what to make of the moonlight Where
will I go after my curfew next Friday night? THE PARENTS' VIEW
Mother didn't want to see That her daughter had lost her pearl She wanted
to pretend it hadn't happened But on the football field On Friday
Under the stars There always is lust For young girls Her mother
remembered Losing her pearl She cried for her little girl The father
is old now He remembers the stars But he's lost all his lust for this
world UNTIL THE END OF THE MOONLIGHT Get up now in the rain in
the moonlight Don't you know that the time is just right? We only have
a few hours in the night Don't you know there's no time like tonight?
Take me away, through the rain and the moonlight Don't you know there's innocence
in the night? Oh, hold me now till the end of the moonlight There's no
forever, but just hold me tonight AFTER THE FIREWORKS BLOW Where
will each of you go After the fireworks blow tonight? Don't you know
it's a hot summer night? You're on the edge of an age All of this is
gonna end And you might not ever see her again But you have her tonight
In the palm of your hand She said you can't hold her forever, So
just hold her tonight You don't know where you'll be After the fireworks
blow tonight You never want this to end, But soon she might not see you
ever again We always hope that it will be better And beauty will leave
you, if you let her The girl doesn't have to escape only if you let her
Beauty doesn't have to die, only if you let her Fate will only beat you if
you let her So, you have her now, in the palm of your hands Innocence
dies, but idealism only will if you let it This hope will only leave you if
you let it |
