LIVING LIKE GATSBY

You wake up at 6:28
You have to be to work by 8
You take a shower and you get dressed
Hop the bus and it takes you west

All the commuters got their headphones on
The tired look of passion long gone
Check into your cubicle at 8:03
Another dull day spent living the dream

I know you thought you'd be livin' like Gatsby
But you're not quite there today
I know you thought you'd be livin' like Gatsby
But you're not quite there today
Oh, well, Gatsby went down in the end anyway

You'll hit the condo around 7
And watch the box until 11
Hopefully you get some lovin'
Don't pass out with a pizza in the oven
Then the sadness comes creeping in
In the dark bedroom at 2am
Picture on the nightstand when you were 18
You said you'd be brash like Gatz till you achieved the dream

I know you thought you'd be living like Gatsby
But you're not quite there today
I know you thought you'd be living like Gatsby
But you're not quite there today
He went down in the end, anyway

You've got the VIP pass
At the middle class bash
You all get together and tear it up on the weekend
But sometimes life seems to have no meaning
And there's nothing important to do
Your life spins out of control
So you just dance, get drunk, and screw
Bartender, how about another brew?
Sometime you think that you've failed
Sometimes fairytales pull you through
You've got no place else to fall
So here you are

You might never be living like Gatsby
(Time to do some livin')
So what are you gonna do today?
(Time to live just for today)
You might never be living like Gatsby but you still have to face the day
That's all you've got, in the end, anyway

Maybe at a party by the sea
When the light hits you just right
When you've got the right haircut and the right suit
And you're in shape
It will all come together
All the girls that did you wrong
All the people that scorned you
You'll have champagne together
You can dance and get drunk and screw
But until that day
There's a lot of shitty work to do

THEATER

You sat alone in the theater chairs
You watched the credits roll with a faraway stare
You felt no one could see there was somebody there
You saw the dame in the golden scene, golden hair
You loved the cinematography, the amber grain
You say you'll write the script and bring the girl back
You have a list of resolves in your wallet
And a capacity to make the past perfect again

You said the sky is never quite that gold
And that shade of white is an impossible hue to hold

You sit alone in your cubicle
You escape the ringing of the phone
You got a picture of Venice on the wall
You retreat to the bathroom stall
Old money crushes new money anyways
And those with none don't get in the game
We'll walk with dancers; we'll feel sad at the parties
Because we glimpsed the perfection that could be

You said the sky is never quite that gold
And that shade of white is an impossible hue to hold

MOTIVATION SITUATION

The lonesome tippler is leaning
Against the brick wall
He checks into the clinic
He writes his name on the stall
I received all of your letters
I boxed up every one
I know we're past the point
Where life is all that fun

If you have a situation where you need some motivation
Baby, you can call on me
Everyone has trouble chasin' and they need some motivation
I'll be the one
You can look for when you need some hope to believe

Believe in what you do
Every day when you go to work
I've read through every letter
I've labeled every song
I've made a run at being present in every situation
Right or wrong

If you have a situation where you need some motivation
Baby, you can call on me
Everyone has trouble chasin' and they need some motivation
I'll be the one
You can look for when you need some hope to believe

WITH CANDY ON CHRISTMAS EVE

Candy, the snow is falling for the first time in a long while in Seattle
Covers the street and snows us in over in the U-District,
With all the baseball players in white hats
So we took the sled across 45th, we made our way to Fremont
The Ave is full of Ave rats, kids begging for change
The University is immersed in the Seattle sea,
We walked down to Gasworks Park, along the Burke Gillman Trail
Everybody covers up in Seattle - you've got the fleece, I'll grab my ski cap

Candy, the snow is falling outside our window tonight
We can cross the Aurora Bridge, maybe take a walk by the lake
I don't want to be here forever
If it weren't for you, I'd leave today
Light a candle for each one of your lost lovers
Candy, we have other places to discover

Now the Ave rats cause trouble on the Ave,
But we're safe at Dick's with a Coke and a bag
Got too drunk to make it to school
We'll get old and we'll have day jobs
But nothing will ever be this fun
We can take the Blazer to the Eastside, take it for a ride
They'll be meeting in the white hats by the kegs in the dark
Let's go down to Madison Park

Candy, the snow is falling outside our window tonight
We can cross the Aurora Bridge, maybe take a walk by the lake
I don't want to be here forever
If it weren't for you, I'd leave today
You're a string that tethers together all the lost lovers
Candy, we have other places to discover

SHE'S HAD IT

Candy spoke softly in the dark to him
She was slight and angel thin,
A 33 inch began to spin
By the window in the moonlight
Rick Danko's voice was tight
In the house up near Northgate
She said
I've had it

Candy said I've never met a guy look you
You knew things I wanted to know, too
You made me see things differently
Than how I was raised
But just as Bill felt praised
She grabbed her bag and rattled her keys
She said this situation is what I hate
She said
I've had it

Billy said the future's unpredictable
We both live in separate homes by supermalls
I want to move where the city's accessible
So we can go to the museums
And care what we're both seeing
But this suburban world doesn't feel right
It never feels right, you feel right, but this doesn't feel right

Candy said you never seem to know
What you want from the future, high or low
I want to make plans, but you can't show me
That you have plans, too
So there's nothing else for me to do
I can't stand it
I've had it

Candy hopped on the bus and rolled away
Billy, said tomorrow will be gray
And I will be gray, too, one day
So will she, but I won't get to see
The color of the fog confuses me
But there are no other options
She has had it

SHE GOES TO SHOWS ALONE

The summer dress girl said, "Your band played past two
You seem to feel the dreams and fireworks like I do"
She said, "Sometimes I feel so empty that I go downtown alone
I go to hip-hop shows solo and turn off my phone"

I watch the show and feel the beat
The vacant faces light up the round
You can find me in the disco alone
Always alone, always alone

Tapping to the beat, tapping to the beat
It ignites the lost souls who go to the show

She said, "Do you think we're getting too old for it?
The patio folks still don't pay attention to me"
I say, "With your parents' friends as company,
I can see why you want to bid that life goodbye"

We all get desperate sometimes
And your family can't help you

You can find me in the disco alone
Always alone, always alone

Tapping to the beat, tapping to the beat
It ignites the lost souls who go to the show

You've rocked my soul
And I want everyone else on earth to know
But I'll settle for knowing what it's like while I'm alone

YOU LET 'EM DOWN

Passing trends
Passing cars
People losing their breath
In the smoky bars

Passing glances
Passing ages
Passing stars

You let 'em down
Now you let 'em rule you
There's no reason you should let that weigh on your back
You let 'em down
But life is full of heartbreak,
Sweatin' it is a foolish thing to do
Watch yourself
Ooo-ooo-ooo-ooo
Before you let yourself down, too

AN AMERICAN DREAM

Hold my hand tightly and give me your dowry, Candy
My mother was good with her money, too, you know
This was the dawn of the new millennium, and we ate our pizza and Diet Coke
And we boarded the train to find an American dream

Seattle is just a forgotten and rainy small town
High school friends, they follow you and you can't escape the past
A 14 hour drive to get to San Francisco
Candy and I looked for a part of the American dream

We're the fortunate ones
We had to run for the train in the rain
I'm still breathing heavy, damn those cigarettes
When we went to Canada I stopped at the duty-free
But you know Candy didn't want to see too much Whiskey in me

Snacking on the bus, you've got your new hat
And all of the memories remind me of that fact
That you read the rags about real estate in California
And I'll read the poetry and we'll hold hands
As the stars come out in the country just outside Ashland, Oregon

I woke up in a panic, in the middle of Marin County
And I talked to Candy as she slept
She used to talk to me, when I was asleep and I'd listen, I'd hear her voice
Now it's just reminiscin'
Tomorrow, Candy, I said we're going to ride across the Golden Gate Bridge
Throw a rock in the water and see how it is to ripple
Like the dream that you're in
Oh, Candy, all those cars out on the Golden Gate bridge
Are looking for their part of the American dream
I hope there is enough of it for all of us
I hope there is enough

YOU GET THROUGH TO MY HEART

The gentlemen inside will treat you well and kind
And he will be sincere
And won't demand anything in return
It takes a superstar, like you
To get through to my heart

The world is full of loners
Looking out for themselves
It's hard to know the right way
The truth's so hard to tell
But it takes a superstar, like you
To get through to my heart

I look forward to each time that I see you
I can't wait to tell about all the things that I've done
Makes me so happy to be happily in love with someone like you
Want to bust open the door
And celebrate what we've begun

The gentlemen inside will hide, he'll try to be a stranger
But he'll come out to carry you
And save you from all danger
It takes a superstar, like you
To get through to my heart
